Water Supply Service.

Arusha is supplied with water from three different sources which are; springs, boreholes and rivers. The spring sources include Olesha-Masama springs along Themi River located 4km north of the City, Ngarendolu and Machare springs located within the City. Others include Lolomsikio Sp published on ring, Benetti Spring (Located in Monduli), Kiranyi Spring, Sekei Spring, Forest Overflow Spring, Saiteru Spring, Hazina Spring (Located in Ngaramtoni), Kibola, Kigeri, Ngarasero, Ndurumanga, Kiliflora, Nurangima (Located in Usa River). Springs contribute 46.3% of the total water production.

Currently, AUWSA has a total of 32 boreholes which contribute 30% of the daily water production, whereby some are new coming from the ASUWSDP Project. Moreover, AUWSA has three river sources which contribute an average of 23.7% of the total water production, these include Nduruma river which is located in the north of the city, Mto Simba located in Siha District and Olgilai river located in Arumeru. The production capacity fluctuates seasonally from an average of 50,000m3 /day in dry seasons to 65,000m3 /day during rainy seasons while the demand increased from 94,623.45m3 /day (2015) to 121,459m3 /day (2020) which includes residents within the extended areas such as Monduli, USA River, Ngaramtoni and Longido towns. AUWSA area of service has been extended to include some parts of Arumeru District as per GN No. 490 of 2018 which extended service area to include seven wards of Matevesi, Kiutu, Bangata, Kiranyi, Moivo, Kisongo and Sokoni II and as per GN No. 661 of 2019 which has extended area of service to include USA River, Longido, Ngaramtoni and Monduli. Currently the water distribution system comprises of 843.189 km of pipeline in Arusha City, 57.335Km in Longido, 192.5Km in Monduli, 110.2 Km in Usa River and 110.2 km in Ngaramtoni with diameters ranging from 32mm (1”) to 700mm (28”), the pipe materials are of very old Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, PVC and Polythene. The system also includes storage reservoirs with a total capacity of 34,919.5m3, 28 break pressure tanks, 381 water kiosks and 59 standpipes (Status as of June, 2020). The present water supply network coverage increased from 44% attained in 2017 to 57% in 2020. Water quality from all sources (springs, rivers and boreholes) is within the required Tanzania Standards. For safety purposes, water treatment is done using calcium hypochlorite and water quality monitoring is done by collecting samples from the distribution system and checked for residual chlorine on weekly basis and so far, the results have always been excellent.

Water bowsers

AUWSA has established a water bowsers service supplying service starting with the capacity of up to 10,000 litres. The service is targeted to improve service availability to the customers.
